Each rose group has its own unique strength in the garden
We provide you with a concise overview of the characteristics of bed roses, miniature roses, hybrid tea roses, nostalgic varieties, climbing roses, shrub roses and standard roses.
Important to know: The boundaries are often blurred. Some varieties, such as the popular Giardina®, can be grown as both shrub roses and climbing roses.
Patio/Miniature roses
Patio/miniature roses are delightful roses about 30 to 50 cm tall. They are particularly suitable for stone gardens, around the patio and as grave plantings. Of course, miniature roses are also ideal for balconies and pots (pot height at least 35 cm). The planting width is about 30-35 cm, which equals 9-11 plants per m².
We recommend: Apricot Clementine® (apricot), Hobby® (pink), Peach Clementine® (orange--rose), Sugar Baby® (pink);
Ground cover roses
Ground cover roses include roses that have a creeping, flat-growing to strongly arching growth habit. They rarely grow taller than 80 cm. This group of roses is ideal for flowering ground cover and is particularly easy to care for.
We recommend: Alpenglühen® (red), Aspirin® Rose (white-pink), Jazz® (apricot-orange-pink), Kastelruther®Spatzen Rose (white), Matador® (red), Mirato® (pink), Satina® (soft pink), Schneekönigin® (white with yellow centre), Stadt Rom® (pink)
Bedding roses
Polyantha and floribunda roses, due to their rich branching, often form a wonderful sea of flowers throughout the summer (June to October). Bedding roses are particularly suitable for planting in beds, borders and are also popular in public greenery. Most varieties reach a height of growth of 50 to 80 cm. It is best to plant bedding roses in groups of three or more with a planting distance of about 30 to 40 cm depending on the growth habit of the variety, which equals 6 to 10 plants per m².
We recommend: Alabaster® (white), Aspirin® Rose (soft pink-white), Bailando® (pink), Goldelse® (golden yellow), Hansestadt Rostock® (apricot), Lampion® (yellow), Arifa® (red), Sirius® (white);
Hybrid tea roses
A hybrid tea rose is what is known as the queen of roses. The usually very large and well-filled flowers of the hybrid tea roses are usually one single flower on strong stems. Therefore, hybrid tea roses are wonderfully suitable for vase cutting, and many of them have a wonderful fragrance. Hybrid tea roses reach heights of 80 to 130 cm. We recommend a planting distance of about 40 cm, which equals 6 plants per m².
We recommend: Acapella® (pink), Barkarole® (red), Candlelight® (yellow), Desirée® (pink), Duftrausch® (pink), Lady Like® (pink), Noblesse® (pink);
Shrub roses
The ornamental shrub roses, which bloom more often, grow upright with usually slightly hanging branches and generally reach a height of 1,2 - 1,5 m. Shrub roses are suitable not only as a group planting or hedge, but especially as an eye-catcher in the midst of a groundcover planting. As the smallest unit, it is recommended to plant three ornamental shrub roses in a triangle with a distance of 50 cm. Otherwise, the planting distance is up to one meter, depending on the variety.
We recommend: Arabia® (orange), Emil Nolde® rose (yellow), Global Water® (aquamarine-pink), Matthias Claudius rose (soft-apricot), Paprika® (red), Romanze® (pink), Rosario® (pink), Sahara® (golden yellow-bronze).
Climbing roses
Frequent-flowering climbing roses often form meter-long shoots of 2-3 m and more, which can be beautifully led up arbors, pergolas or house walls. They are usually descended from polyantha hybrids or floribunda roses and, like them, bloom in profuse clusters. The planting distance is 1-2 m.
We recommend: Barock® (pink-yellow), Camelot® (pink), Dukat® (yellow), Lawinia® (pink), Perennial Domino® (red), Santana® (red), Schneewalzer® (white), Shogun® (salmon-pink), Uetersener Klosterrose® (apricot-white).
Park and wild roses
Most park roses are garden roses with a wild rose character that do not climb, but form shrubs of greater or lesser size. With a few exceptions, almost all varieties are once a year blooming. The planting distance is about 1-2 m, depending on the purpose (for a hedge closer together) and variety.
Standard roses
Standard roses are various roses of all groups that have been grafted onto a stem. Different stem lengths are distinguished:
Half standard roses = 40-60 cm stem length
High standard roses = 70-90 cm stem lengt
Cascade standard roses = 110-140 cm stem length
The growth habit of the standard rose depends entirely on the variety grafted onto the stem. Thus, hybrid tea roses remain upright and climbing roses and groundcover roses remain hanging.
Nostalgic roses
Nostalgic flower shapes, with their special charm, wonderful fragrance and the strongly hybrid tea flowers with partly wavy petals are always in demand among garden lovers. Following the example of the "ancient roses" and "English roses", nostalgic roses have been combined with modern hardiness in the recent years. These varieties are mainly shrub roses, but also bedding, hybrid tea and climbing roses with nostalgic flower shapes.
We recommend: Artemis® (white), Augusta Luise® (apricot-pink), Baronesse® (pink), Gospel® (purple), Giardina® (pink), Nostalgie® (cherry-cream-white), Pastella® (pale pink), Piano® (red);
Starlet® roses (Mini climber)
They are the little sisters of climbing roses. These prolific flowering mini climbing roses grow to a height of approx. 1.5-2 m, are extremely vigorous and flower profusely. The flowers are medium-sized (4-6 cm), but always very full and long-lasting. Some of them have a beguiling fragrance. Another special feature is the continuous growth from the basal area during the summer months, which promises continuous flowering throughout the summer. Starlet® roses are very well suited for planting in pots, on patios and balconies as low, compact privacy screens or as romantic borders for seating areas.
We recommend: Starlet® Eva, Starlet® Alina
