Advice and Rose Care

How to bring your roses through summer

Roses are generally undemanding plants. With our tips you make it even easier for your rose favorites to establish themselves in your garden and get through the summer:

  • An optimal location: enough sun, at least 5 - 6 hours / day

  • Watering during a prolonged dry period is not essential, since roses are quite drought resistant. However, if the water reserve allows and there is no water shortage in your area, watering every 2-3 weeks can help roses to get through the heat even better.
To avoid infestation by fungal pests, water laterally from below so that the leaves remain dry. A small dam of soil around the plant will prevent the water from running away. Your roses will be particularly pleased with rainwater or stagnant tap water.

  • In case of prolonged drought, loosen the area around the rose a little (e.g. with a rose fork), so that on one hand air gets to the roots and on the other hand the water absorption capacity is increased for the next rain or watering.

  • If there is ever an infestation of downe mildew, it is advisable to remove the leaves, collect them from the ground and then dispose them in the household waste.

  • Feel free to apply a thin layer of new soil around the rose as well, this will prevent the spores from spreading further. Most roses have enough resistance and will soon recover.

  • After the first flush (at the beginning of July), it's time for a final fertilizer application to give the wood enough time to harden before the frost. At the same time, cut back the faded rose shoots until the first fully developed mature leaf. As fertilizers organic-mineral mixtures are suitable, but for the last fertilization take only 2/3 of the recommended amount.
