What are wild shoots on roses, what do they look like?
Not every 7-petaled leaf belongs to a wild shoot. However, for some varieties this leaf shape is typical (rambler roses). However, if you discover a lighter-colored, very vigorous shoot with an unusual leaf shape among typical rose shoots in the plant, the probability of a wild shoot is very high.
You can determine if this is the case by exposing the neck of the root. To do this, carefully remove the surrounding soil with a hand shovel. Any shoots that emerge above the grafting point are those of the rose grafted onto it. Shoots that emerge below the grafting point on the rootstock are the so-called wild shoots. Remove them as early as possible at the base by tearing them off with a pull downwards.
